Identity verification and age verification is an increasinly common policy conversation at the moment, in numerous countries.
Often, this is in combination with proposals to ban children from varying concepts of “social media”, which generally means that everyone would have to prove that they were not a child.
I have yet to see a well-considered proposal.
Worse, the question that they are trying answer is rarely stated clearly and concisely.
And it is unusual to see any consideration of broader sociological issues, let alone an emphasis on this, with a focus instead on perceived “quick win” technosolutionism.
I was pondering last night for which services I, personally, would actually be willing to verify my age or identity.
At least, none that I can think of at the moment.
I appreciate that I compute in an unusual way (when compared with most computer users), and that much of what I do online is about accessing my own services.
Some of those - my fedi server, my RSS server, my messaging services - are build around enjoying stuff from other people’s services.
Would I be willing to verify my identity or age to read someone’s RSS feed? No. While I enjoy the myriad blogs that I follow, none are crucial to me.
I occasionally watch videos (which started on YouTube, but which I download into my Jellyfin instance), and perhaps YouTube will be forced to do age verification. It would be a shame, but again, I’ll just not watch YouTube videos. Not a big loss. Mostly, I buy secondhand DVDs, rip them, and watch them from my Jellyfin instance. I haven’t been asked to verify my age for a DVD purchase (online or offline) in a very long time.
Friends have had to attempt to block access to their sites from the UK. While I can still access their sites via Tor, that’s what I tend to do. I feel sorry for them for the likely significant drop in visitors, likely affecting their enjoyment and in some cases their revenue, and, probably their incentive to continue to write / post / record stuff.
I don’t use any individual forums any more (their demise is a shame; I’d prefer this over centralised discussion sites), nor do I use Reddit. I occasionally look at the comments on HN if one of my posts is surfaced there, but if HN forced identify or age verification, I’d just stop doing it. No big deal for me.
Websites with comments sections? I don’t want to see the comments anyway, so I block those, which makes for a very pleasant browsing experience. I don’t comment myself.
Code forges / places to contribute to FOSS? Most of my FOSS contributions are non-code, but even so, I use some organisation’s GitLab repos, and occasionally I contribute to projects on other forges. I doubt that my contributions are meaningful in themselves, and it may not be an option to switch infrastructure in any case (that might ont make the requirement go away), but since I am not a massive, or particularly valuable contributor, I’d feel less bad about simply stepping away.
For Wikipedia, I’d probably rebuild my Kiwix instance and use that instead. Yes, articles would not be quite so up to date, but I rarely access Wikipedia for rapidly-changing information. In any case, there are tradeoffs, and personally I would prefer my privacy, the security of my personal data, and, well, just not being part of this kind of censorship.
Signal? That would be a pain. I don’t have a workaround for that. I’m happily using XMPP, but as a complement to Signal, not an alternative.
Teams/Zoom? I don’t have accounts on those services, but I do join, via my browser, when a client sends me a link. If I was faced with a choice of having to verify my identity/age for these services, then I’d have to consider the position carefully. Realistically, I am not in a position to say “no, I will not use Teams”, as some long-term clients are not going to change their corporate approach just because Neil doesn’t like something, and I’d rather not lose them as clients. So that could be a pain, if those services were within scope.
I’ll still object to these measures - “I’m okay, Jack” would be a selfish stance - but, in practice, yes, I’d be surprised if they impacted me.
Self-imposed (or, at least, self-controlled) digital isolationism, perhaps.
Or perhaps, in the future, some service will pop up that I will really, really want to use, despite it requiring identity / age verification.

The Condé Nast-owned Ars Technica has terminated senior AI reporter Benj Edwards following a controversy over his role in the publication and retraction of an article that included AI-fabricated quotes, Futurism has confirmed.
Earlier this month, Ars retracted the story after it was found to include fake quotes attributed to a real person. The article — a write-up of a viral incident in which an AI agent seemingly published a hit piece about a human engineer named Scott Shambaugh — was initially published on February 13. After Shambaugh pointed out that he’d never said the quotes attributed to him, Ars‘ editor-in-chief Ken Fisher apologized in an editor’s note, in which he confirmed that the piece included “fabricated quotations generated by an AI tool and attributed to a source who did not say them” and characterized the error as a “serious failure of our standards.” He added that, upon further review, the error appeared to be an “isolated incident.” (404 Media first reported on the retraction.)
Shortly after Fisher’s editor’s note was published, Edwards, one of the report’s two bylined authors, took to Bluesky to take “full responsibility” for the inclusion of the fabricated quotes.
In the post, Edwards said that he was sick at the time, and “while working from bed with a fever and very little sleep,” he “unintentionally made a serious journalistic error” as he attempted to use an “experimental Claude Code-based AI tool” to help him “extract relevant verbatim source material.” He said the tool wasn’t being used to generate the article, but was instead designed to “help list structured references” to put in an outline. When the tool failed to work, said Edwards, he decided to try and use ChatGPT to help him understand why.
“I should have taken a sick day because in the course of that interaction, I inadvertently ended up with a paraphrased version of Shambaugh’s words rather than his actual words,” Edwards continued. He emphasized that the “text of the article was human-written by us, and this incident was isolated and is not representative of Ars‘ editorial standards. None of our articles are AI-generated, it is against company policy and we have always respected that.”
Edwards also stressed that his colleague Kyle Orland, the site’s senior gaming editor who co-bylined the retracted story, had “no role in this error.”
The controversy was met with a wave of pushback and speculation from Ars readers, many of whom expressed deep frustration and disappointment in a lengthy comment thread on the website. On February 27, Ars creative director Aurich Lawson, while closing the comment thread, said that “Ars has completed its review of this matter” and that “the appropriate internal steps have been taken.”
“In the coming weeks, we’ll publish a reader-facing guide explaining how we use and do not use AI in our work,” Lawson wrote. “We do not comment on personnel decisions.”
As of February 28, Edwards’ bio on Ars was changed to past tense, according to an archived version of the webpage. It now reads that Edwards “was a reporter at Ars, where he covered artificial intelligence and technology history.”
Futurism reached out to Ars, Condé Nast, and Edwards to inquire about the reporter’s employment status. Neither the publication nor its owner replied. Edwards said he was unable to comment at this time.
Ars‘ retraction isn’t the first AI controversy to rock a newsroom, nor to anger a publication’s readers. It also comes at a moment in which many media bosses are pushing staff to find uses for AI — as are executives across most industries — even while clear guidelines around use of the technology that uphold editorial ethics remain elusive.
These edicts to integrate AI, meanwhile, are backdropped by a complicated, ever-shifting landscape: contentious copyright battles between news giants and AI companies; simultaneous deal-striking by news giants and AI companies; an internet increasingly full of AI-generated slop news and misinformation; and a traffic cliff tied to Google’s “AI Overviews,” which now paraphrase news instead of pointing readers to a list of blue links.
It’s a combustive, disorienting moment in the history of media and technology, when lines in the sand are being drawn by both journalists and their audiences. And the Ars fallout underlines a phenomenon we’ve seen again and again, as even people who are deeply familiar with AI and its shortcomings can end up relying on it at a critical moment — and in the process, fall victim to something much older than generative AI: human error.
“The irony of an AI reporter being tripped up by AI hallucination is not lost on me,” Edwards said in his February 15 Bluesky post. “I take accuracy in my work very seriously and this is a painful failure on my part.”

Over drinks a few weeks ago, a friend told me he’d been offered a promotion, to an Engineering Manager role. He planned to decline it, but wanted to hear my take first.
Until recently, my answer in such conversations was always “100% go for it”. My logic was that it’s a super valuable experience, even if someone is not looking for the management career path. I told every engineer that a couple of years as an EM would teach them valuable skills, and they could always go back afterward.
This time, we had a long discussion about the tradeoffs, and I finally agreed with him that he should not take that step.
Here are the main arguments from our conversation:
AI coding tools are fast, capable, and completely context-blind. Even with rules, skills, and MCP connections, they generate code that misses your conventions, ignores past decisions, and breaks patterns. You end up paying for that gap in rework and tokens.
It builds organizational context from your code, PR history, conversations, docs, and runtime signals. It maps relationships across systems, reconciles conflicting information, respects permissions, and surfaces what matters for the task at hand. Instead of guessing, agents operate with the same understanding as experienced engineers.
* Generate plans, code, and reviews that reflect how your system actually works
* Reduce costly retrieval loops and tool calls by providing better context up front
* Spend less time correcting outputs for code that should have been right in the first place

The pace of change in the last year has been completely crazy, and it’s not stopping.
But even if you don’t give in to the constant FOMO - it’s impossible to argue that the way we worked hasn’t changed. Almost every part of our work looks different, and will continue to evolve.
You’ve probably seen this tweet - the creator of Claude Code asking why Anthropic still needs software engineers:
My friend was afraid that as a manager, he’d have less time to experiment and adapt. Especailly with a bigger team (he was offered to manage 6), you don’t have much time to play around.
I could definitely relate to his fear. There are so many ideas I want to work on, tech I want to play with, and so little time to actually do it.
The classic EM ladder used to look like: EM → Senior EM → Director → VP.
But companies have been flattening for two years now. Amazon increased its IC-to-manager ratio by 15%, and other companies followed.
This means there are fewer Director and VP roles to grow into (and much less Senior EM ones). You can be a great EM for years and find yourself stuck.
Companies still need someone to run teams, but from Senior EM upward, it becomes much more competitive. You’re competing with experienced leaders who were laid off from those ‘flattened’ companies.
Also, there is less opportunity for internal growth. As an EM, to get promoted, you mostly need to start managing more engineers, which might not be possible right now. It’s more likely you’ll just get bigger scope with the same team - not a feat worthy of promotion.
As an IC, being excellent at building things can get you much further.
While my friend was offered a bump with the promotion to EM, the total compensation was less than the offers he received for Senior/Staff Engineer at other startups.
This surprised him. The assumption has always been that management pays more. It does, if you compare an EM to a Senior Engineer at the same company. But when you compare across the industry, being a Staff engineer is better paid. I believe it’s because those engineers are in huge demand (and will continue to be so).
For my friend specifically, staying on the IC track, becoming a Staff engineer and switching companies would have given him ~20-30% more than the EM promotion he was offered.
First of all, I’m very optimistic about experienced Engineering Managers (who stayed hands-on), as I wrote in Engineering Management in the Age of Agents.
While we are probably less sharp tech-wise, there are tons of relevant skills the job taught us over the years, that will still be relevant.
And while it’s hard, I think I’ll manage to keep up.
But the main reason is that I enjoy my job.
While rationally I believe that being an IC is a smarter choice in 2026, I know I would enjoy it less.
James Stanier wrote a great article about what to do when the ladder disappears, to help you figure out where you should aim. I highly recommend the exercise there!
If you are a senior engineer, the bottom line is that I wouldn’t recommend the jump to management right now. I would wait a couple of years to see how things will look like.
BUT, and it’s a big but - if your gut tells you to do it (and not your brain), if it’s truly a path you want to pursue - then go for it!

Each phase is built from seven sourced components: personnel ($40,000,000/day, ~50,000 deployed), naval forces ($22,000,000/day for 2 CSGs, 7 DDGs, 6 LCS), aircraft operations ($48,000,000/day across 12 airframe types at full O&S per-hour rates), fuel & logistics ($15,000,000/day), non-tracked ordnance ($35,000,000/day), C4ISR/cyber/space ($10,000,000/day), and overhead/unmodeled costs ($50,000,000/day). On the “overhead” category: Bottom-up defense cost models typically capture 60–75% of true costs (per CBO and RAND methodology notes). The remainder includes classified programs, ~25,000 contractor personnel, allied force coordination, surge deployment overhead, combat search & rescue, MEDEVAC, base hardening, and other friction costs that are real but not directly observable from open sources.
Not included: Long-term veteran healthcare (historically 2–4× direct war costs over decades), economic opportunity costs, indirect costs from energy market disruption (oil up ~15%), allied nation expenditures, or environmental remediation. These omissions mean the true total taxpayer cost will be significantly higher than shown.
